Harbour Town: Round 4 notes – Verizon Heritage

Photo - Aaron Baddeley * After missing the cut in his inaugural Verizon Heritage appearance in 2001, 2006 champion Aaron Baddeley has reeled off three consecutive top-10 finishes at the tournament (1-2006, T10-2007, T2-2008). The runner-up finish by Baddeley is the fourth of his career and first since he finished T2 at the 2007 BMW Championship.

* Weather: Sunny and warm, with temperatures reaching into the upper 70s. Winds WSW 10-15 mph.

* With the victory, Boo Weekley collects 4,500 FedExCup points to move from No. 33 to No. 7 in the points standings, with 7,747 points. Tiger Woods maintains the top spot with 17,745 points. The win was worth a career-best $990,000 for Weekley, eclipsing the $972,000 he pocketed when he won the 2007 Verizon Heritage.

* By the numbers on Boo Weekley: He becomes just the third player to win back-to-back titles at the Verizon Heritage, joining Payne Stewart (1989-90) and Davis Love III (1991-92) … He is the second player this season to successfully defend a title, joining Tiger Woods (Buick Invitational) … He is one of 101 former Nationwide Tour players with victories on the PGA TOUR, with his win the 226th by a former Tour alumnus … He is the eighth winner this season in his 30s and the first since Geoff Ogilvy at the WGC-CA Championship … Kept a streak alive of Verizon Heritage defending champions making the cut, a streak that dates back to Davis Love III’s missed cut in 1993 … His three-stroke win is the largest at the Verizon Heritage since Davis Love III won by seven shots in 1998.

* Boo Weekley becomes the first player to post his first two victories at the same PGA TOUR event since J.B. Holmes won the FBR Open earlier this season (2006, 2008). Prior to Weekley and Holmes, the last players to perform the feat were Vaughn Taylor (2004 and 2005 Reno-Tahoe Open) and Brian Henninger (1994 and 1999 Southern Farm Bureau Classic).

* The runner-up finish by Anthony Kim is the second of his career on TOUR, and the first since he finished T2 in his professional debut at the 2006 Valero Texas Open. He collected 2,200 FedExCup points this week to jump all the way from 82nd to 31st on the season points list.

* Davis Love III finished T36 in his bid this week for a sixth Verizon Heritage title. Love has now made 23 consecutive starts at the annual Hilton Head. In addition to his wins in 1987, 1991, 1992, 1998 and 2003, he has six additional top-10 finishes for a tournament-record 11 such finishes.

* Camilo Villegas, who ended the 2007 season with three top-10 finishes (T9, T7, T9) in the last three FedExCup Playoff events, finished T7 this week for his first top 10 of the 2008 season (nine starts). Other players notching their first top-10 finish of the season this week were Jason Bohn (6th) and Lucas Glover (T7).

* Jason Bohn’s sixth-place finish was worth $198,000, giving him total earnings of $333,693 this season and in the process guaranteeing PGA TOUR status for the rest of the 2008 campaign. Bohn, who entered the season playing on a Major Medical Extension, had 12 events, but needed only seven, to earn $257,668 (which combined with his 2007 earnings, equals 2007 No. 125’s earnings of $785,180). His last top-10 finish was a runner-up effort at the 2006 Chrysler Classic of Greensboro.

* Two-time champion Stewart Cink’s (2000, 2004) T7 finish is his fifth top-10 finish of the year, moving him into a tie with Tiger Woods and Stuart Appleby for the most this season. He also moves to third on the FedExCup standings through 18 events. Cink now has five top-10 finishes in nine starts at the Verizon Heritage.

* Jim Furyk, who had back-to-back runner-up finishes at the 2005 and 2006 Verizon Heritage, posted his third top-10 finish here with a fourth-place finish this week.

* Michael Letzig finished T7 for his second top-10 finish in 10 career starts (T7-2008 The Honda Classic).

* A player has posted four rounds in the 60s 23 times throughout the history of the Verizon Heritage, with Aaron Baddeley (69-67-67-69) and Jim Furyk (68-68-68-69) doing so this week. Boo Weekley saw his streak of seven consecutive rounds in the 60s at the Verizon Heritage come to an end on Sunday with an even-par 71. The tournament record is held by Nick Price with nine consecutive sub-70 rounds.

* Among the players with local collegiate ties, former Clemson University standout Lucas Glover led the pack with a T7 finish. He was followed by fellow Tigers D.J. Trahan (T17) and Jonathan Byrd (T36). Brett Quigley represented the University of South Carolina’s lone player to make the cut, finishing T61 in his fifth career start at the Verizon Heritage.

* Charles Howell III, making just his third start at the Verizon Heritage (missed cut in 2003, T19 in 2002), finished T12 this week after a final-round 1-under 70. The Augusta, GA native enjoyed plenty of success on Hilton Head Island as an amateur, winning the 1994 and 1996 Junior Heritage.

* Robert Allenby (T14) and Justin Leonard (T17) both made their 11th consecutive cut of the season, the best current streak on TOUR.

* Billy Andrade (69) birdied the first and last hole on Sunday for the only bogey-free round of the day, helping him end the week with a 29-hole bogey-free streak. His T14 finish was his best at the Verizon Heritage since a T2 in 2005. It also represented his best finish on TOUR since a T14 at the 2007 PODS Championship.

* Of the eight past champions of the Verizon Heritage who competed this week, Boo Weekley (1st) enjoyed the best finish. The others were five-time winner Davis Love III (T36), 1995 champion Bob Tway (T41), 1999 winner Glen Day (T64), 2002 champion Justin Leonard (T17), 2000 & 2004 champion Stewart Cink (T7), 2005 winner Peter Lonard (T57) and 2006 champion Aaron Baddeley (T2).

The final-round scoring average at the par-71  Harbour Town Golf Links was 71.514, while the cumulative average for the week was 71.435. The par-3 14th hole ranked as the toughest all week with an average of 3.196. The par-5 fifth hole was the easiest at 4.509.

* Nick Dougherty, who would have entered the final round in a tie for 10th place, withdrew before the final round due to an illness in the family.
